The Newman Popiashvili Gallery was displaced from its anticipated permanent location in September of 2001. A different design task emerged; to design a system and sequence of installations that enabled the gallery to re-inhabit and adaptively appropriate untraditional spaces in the months and year that followed, so that the organization could continue to function in spite of, and perhaps because of, the absence of a permanent, stable setting. This provoked a
destabilization of the relationships between program and site, programmatic place and physical space, which continues over the course of several real, and virtual projects. The initial site into which the gallery was installed was Suite 106 of the Mercer Hotel, the use of which was donated by a patron.
